My On-Call Jury Duty Experience
Update 8/25/2024 -- after two weeks on-call, it turned out that I didn't need to report to the courthouse. Though the website could use some updates, it was overall not too bad of an experience. I'm glad to be a model citizen and to have helped the cause of justice in the USA.
What's up folks. Today I'm going to be talking about my experience being on-call for jury duty in California. Basically, for two weeks I have to check their website every day after 5pm to see if I need to show up to court the next day. I'm about one week in, and so far I haven't been needed in person. While I'm thankful I don't need to show up in person to hear if I'm needed that day, there is still room for improvement.
- Can you let me opt in to getting a text if I need to show up the next day instead of having to check the website? I appreciate the information security, but I'm not in a situation where I need to keep my jury status private from everyone around me. In fact, I haven't gotten a text from the court system at all. I gave you my number, and you already have my number anyway, so why not use it.
- Is there any way you could let me know to show up two days in advance? That would give me one work day to tell my boss and team, reschedule meetings, and plan my work around a missed day.
- It would be nice to know some statistics like "approximately 10% chance each day you'll be called in" or "~50% chance you'll be called in at least one day" based on how many jurors are in the pool. I have no idea what to expect for how many days I may go in.
